CAPITOL R US

Storming the Capitol!!!!!

I was deeply offended by the destruction of the walls, floors, and doors of the Capitol. It felt like a personal violation because it is my Capitol too—a symbol of our shared democracy and heritage, NOT JUST A PLAY THING. I could never imagine desecrating what it represents. Even more heartbreaking were the lives lost of those who were trying to protect it.

Did our words fail us? Couldn’t their wants and desires have been addressed in local districts or through consistent town hall meetings, rather than allowing tensions to build until they reached a boiling point? Some issues in life require constant attention and supervision at every level. Neglecting them only leads to deeper divides and greater harm.

Each person in America has a responsibility to engage actively and thoughtfully in our democracy, a responsibility we’ve too often postponed until “tomorrow.” Now is the time to catch up, to listen, and to have meaningful conversations. Let’s talk—before it’s too late to heal and rebuild together.
